Process Safety Engineer

Baton Rouge, LA

Salary: $100K - $140K + 15% target bonus

 

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own and promote the Process Safety Management (PSM) process for the site.  Be the outspoken proponent for process safety and ensure all plant personnel are knowledgeable of their role in PSM.

  • Establish, develop, implement, and approve the Process Safety Management (PSM), Risk Management Plan (RMP) and Responsible Care (RC) programs for the plant.  Ensure those programs are compliant with regulatory and company requirements.  Routinely audit plant processes, procedures, and practices to ensure compliance with the programs.

  • Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and track action item completion consistent with regulatory and company requirements for all covered processes.

  • Develop, implement, and manage a Management of Change / Pre-Start-up Safety Review (MOC/PSSR) process consistent with company and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide on-going reporting of PSM / RMP / RC program status to plant management.

  • Develop, update, and track action plans pertaining to PSM / RMP / RC tasks.

  • Collaborate with the Training Specialist and Subject Matter Coordinators to ensure compliance with PSM requirements associated with the creation of Operating Information and training of personnel.

  • Coordinate HES Risk Engineering and Insurance Department activities and technical issues.

  • Maintain current knowledge of company / government rules and regulations.

  • Coordinate the completion of gap analyses to Corporate Manufacturing Guidelines and track action items to completion.

  • Provide consultation and assistance related to other areas of knowledge and expertise (i.e., process engineering, safety, environmental activities, etc.).

  • Provide plant management with direction and leadership in the development of strategic Process Safety and Risk Management action plans.

  • Interface with mutually beneficial support groups associated with Process Safety and Risk Management – such as other company plant sites, Corporate Engineering, Safety, Environmental, Risk, Manufacturing, Human Resources, Legal, Insurance and participants in company Corporate Audits.

  • Work with Corporate Process Risk personnel to ensure procedural and program updates properly address facility specific risk engineering issues.  Additionally, ensure that all  procedural and program changes are properly integrated into site procedures.

  • Lead all formal and informal investigations of incidents at the site as deemed appropriate by the plant staff.  Track all incident action items to completion.

  • Develop / train site employees in Process Safety and Risk Management systems such as Risk Ranking, PHAs, and siting analysis, to support and further the education of process safety and risk engineering knowledge at the site.

  • Participate in process safety engineering related issues in external professional and trade organizations – such as CCPS and AIChE.

  • Reports directly to the Technical Manager, but must maintain a strong working relationship with Production, Maintenance, HSS and E Managers to ensure overall site PSM performance.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

  1. BS degree in an Engineering discipline or related field

  2. Five plus years of plant process, maintenance, or project engineering work to effectively interact with plant management including Safety, Maintenance, Operations and Engineering.

  3. High level of safety & environmental awareness and commitment

  4. Proficient in Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)

  5. Physical requirements include the ability to wear personal protective equipment. Must be able to exit facility in expedient manner during an emergency. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders; able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
