Research & Technical Superintendent

Salary: $145K - $165K + 10-15% Annual Bonus




The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the synthesis effort of innovative, differentiating chemistry to drive new product portfolio to success.  The incumbent is a member of the New Product Development Group with the mission to commercialize new products in contribution to the Global Business units’ growth goal.  The incumbent will successfully identify and execute routes for the synthesis of novel target molecules while meeting objectives for cost and production. The position reports directly to the Director of New Product Development (NPD).



  • Determine and implement research strategy for respective projects in the New Product Development portfolio.

  • Generate ideas, identify and execute routes for the synthesis of novel target molecules to meet critical to success criteria for the assigned program.

  • Enhance professional image and competitive advantage through patents, presentations, publications and professional activities; advance areas such as science and process technology development.

  • Keep Program Leader informed of progress and activities; participate actively in department and project meetings.

  • Maintain close collaboration with fellow chemists and scientists in a team environment that is focused on achieving commercialization success and common goals.

  • Function as mentor to aspiring early career scientists; productively collaborate with NPD team members and across scientific disciplines.

  • Follow safe laboratory practices in compliance with EHS, safety officers, and delegates to ensure that the laboratory is a safe work environment; recognizes potential safety issues, documents and discusses them with management and takes action to rectify them.

  • Assume responsibility for assigned laboratory equipment, ensures that they are properly maintained and serviced, and facilitates their use by other scientists.

  • Prepare and deliver reports, provide internal and external presentations.



  • Ph.D. degree in chemistry.

  • 9+ years of synthesis experience in the specialty chemicals space preferably with significant work on specialty polymer synthesis.

  • History of scientific excellence in research in the specialty chemistry industry or agrochemical field; record of publications and patents.

  • Innovative thinker who can identify multiple ways to synthesize molecules; high experimental skill, demonstrated creativity in organic synthesis.

  • Demonstrated track record of using chemistry and creativity to address market needs.

  • Experience in analytical methods such as chromatography, NMR, MS and supplemental techniques.

  • High level of health, safety, and environmental awareness.

  • Self-motivated and self-directed; committed to setting his/her own path in the area of deep understanding and learning of project related science.

  • Have strong organizational and planning skills, ability to meet project timelines and commitments; aptitude to work on multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in surfactants, electrochemistry or polymer characterization.

  • Experience in selection and sourcing of raw materials; setting specifications; economic and regulatory constraints will be an asset; pays attention to avoiding reactions and processes that do not scale well.

  • Proven new product development experience from project inception to technical innovation, manufacturing scale up and successful market launch.

  • Understanding of patent strategy through matter of composition, application and process patents.
